Before C.S.I made its debut on our screens, and long before the true crime genre went viral, there was and still exists the real-world fascinating field of forensic science. We now dedicate a day to celebrate this captivating discipline, known as World Forensic Science Day held on September 17th annually.
Created by the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS), the origins of World Forensic Science Day tie back to the year of 1955. It marks the day when the first ever International Forensic Sciences Symposium was conducted. The day is dedicated to acclaim and recognize the immense contributions that forensic science and its allied disciplines make to the justice system globally.
Over time, the celebration of this day has seen tremendous evolution. From being primarily a day of acknowledgement among the practitioners of the field, it has expanded into a worldwide phenomenon. Forensic enthusiasts, schools, universities, legal systems and even those innocently intrigued, come together to acknowledge the significance and impact of forensic science.
Several memorable events and milestones lace the journey of this day. A noteworthy one was the milestone celebration of the 60th anniversary of the IAFS, which was marked passionately across the world in 2015, enlightening many about the value of forensic sciences.
Today, the celebrations typically involve seminars, workshops, public presentations, and student interactions carried out by professionals in the field. Online platforms share captivating forensic science content to educate and engage the public. The day also highlights how forensic science has rapidly technologically evolved and how it’s used as an indispensable tool in resolving crime.
The World Forensic Science Day inspires a legion of future forensic scientists, stirs increased respect for the field and helps ensure that the sciences behind crime-solving are never taken for granted. So, every September 17th, let’s raise our test tubes in a toast to the unsung heroes of the justice world.
