Hanukkah Overview

Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights

Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, is an eight-day Jewish festival that usually takes place in December. It commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BCE. The word "Hanukkah" means "dedication" in Hebrew, and this joyous holiday is all about remembering the miracle that took place during one of the darkest times in Jewish history.

The story goes like this , after the Holy Temple was reclaimed from the Greek oppressors, there was only enough oil left to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days instead, allowing enough time to prepare more oil. This is why Hanukkah is often called The Festival of Lights. To remember this miracle, Jewish families around the world light the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, over the course of the holiday. Each night, one more candle is lit, until all eight candles (and the central "shamash" or helper candle) are shining brightly.

Another important symbol of Hanukkah is the dreidel, a spinning top with four Hebrew letters on its sides: nun, gimel, hay, and shin. These letters represent the phrase "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham," which translates to "a great miracle happened there." Kids and adults alike enjoy playing this simple game, often using chocolate coins called "gelt" as a prize.

Food also plays a big role in Hanukkah celebrations.

Let’s dive into the history of Hanukkah in a nutshell!

Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish festival, has its roots in the 2nd century BCE. It all began when the Maccabees, a small group of Jewish rebels, took a stand against the powerful Greek rulers.

The Greeks defiled the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, but the Maccabees fought back and emerged victorious. They rededicated the Temple and lit the menorah, a seven-branched candelabrum.

Here’s where the miracle happened: there was only enough oil to burn for one day, but it lasted for eight! So, Hanukkah celebrates the “miracle of the oil.”

Over time, Hanukkah traditions evolved. People started lighting a nine-branched menorah, called hanukkiah, with one candle for each night plus the shamash, used to light the others.

Hanukkah became a time for gift-giving and feasting on oil-based foods like latkes and sufganiyot. The dreidel, a spinning top, evolved into a popular game with a nod to the Maccabees’ story.

Today, Hanukkah is celebrated worldwide with joy and gratitude. It reminds us of the power of hope, faith, and perseverance against all odds.
