It all started with the Icelandic Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red, two medieval texts that describe Leif’s voyage to a land called “Vinland” around the year 1000 AD. The discovery of the L’Anse aux Meadows archaeological site in Newfoundland, Canada, in the 1960s, provided compelling evidence of early Norse settlement in North America, solidifying Leif Erikson’s place in history.

The idea of establishing a day to celebrate Leif Erikson was first proposed by Norwegian-American historian Rasmus B. Anderson in 1874. But it wasn’t until 1929 that Wisconsin became the first state to adopt Leif Erikson Day as an official state observance. Later, in 1956, due to the efforts of Dr. Gerhard M. Kartchner, President Eisenhower’s personal physician, and the Boatswain of the U.S.S. Columbus, Leif Erikson Day went from being celebrated at the state level to the national level. President Lyndon B. Johnson finally declared October 9th as Leif Erikson Day in 1964, cementing its status as a national observance.
