The history of wedding celebrations have experienced an adventurous evolution from simpler times to the grand occasions we witness today. A blend of love, dedication and unity, weddings were far more than simply parties in ancient times. They were rites, incantations enacted to infuse the celestial into the everyday.
Going back to ancient Rome, weddings were viewed primarily as a way to ensure progeny and conserve wealth. The groom would ‘capture’ his bride, symbolizing the Roman idea of ‘marriage by purchase’. Change came in the Middle Ages in Europe, when an element of public declaration appeared in the form of ‘banns’, a public announcement of marriage intentions.
Weddings blossomed in popularity during the Victorian Era, largely due to Queen Victoria herself. She popularized the concept of marrying for love, and introduced the world to the white wedding gown – a tradition that lives on strong today.
In the 20th century, growth in technology and travel made destination weddings and large guest lists possible, grandeur unsurpassed! Wedding traditions differed from culture to culture, some more beautifully peculiar than others.
In Africa, for instance, the groom arrives at the bride’s home with a dowry, often in the form of cattle. In Rural Sweden, a groom might steal his bride away and the wedding guests must find them; a delightful hunt leading to a life of joy.
The evolution didn’t stop there. As we moved into the 21st century, social media and digital communication transformed how we think about weddings. Now, the celebrations stretch beyond the wedding day itself, encompassing engagement parties, bridal showers, stag parties, and a bevy of other prenuptial shindigs.
So here’s to love, here’s to those magical moments we call weddings. As much as they’ve changed, the essence remains the same – a pledge of togetherness, love, and hope for a future spent together.
