Descending upon us on 17th June each year is World Circular Economy Day. Signifying an eco-conscious movement that keeps the planet’s well-being at its heart. Hailing from the verdant corridors of Europe, this thoughtful day is meant to promote a green economy where resources are utilized to their fullest potential, minimizing waste.
The concept of a Circular Economy was coined by British environmental economists David W. Pearce and R. Kerry Turner in 1989. However, it wasn’t until 2018, when The Circulars, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, declared 17th June to be officially recognized as World Circular Economy Day.
One of the major milestones in the journey of circular economy was the European Green Deal in 2019. A roadmap designed to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where ‘No net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050’ and ‘No person and no place is left behind’. The day echoes these aspirations, educating people about sustainable consumption and production.
Over time, the celebration of World Circular Economy Day has evolved dramatically. Initially a day of discussions and reports, it has transformed into a worldwide phenomenon acknowledging the importance of a sustainable economic model. Today, it is packed with virtual events, discussions, workshops, and even the prestigious The Circulars award ceremony!
Communities, industries, and countries come together to share ideas, innovations, and success stories that inspire others to adopt the Circular Economy Model. In doing so, this day serves as a beacon of hope for a sustainable future that is within our reach, if we choose to embrace it.
World Circular Economy Day is not just an observance; it is a movement! A testament to our potential to bring about transformative change when we commit our collective consciousness towards a common goal – an environmentally sustainable future.
