Kennedy of the United States declared four fundamentary consumer rights: the right to safety, the right to information, the right to choose, and the right to heard.
While these rights formed the bedrock, it was not until 1983 that Consumer International, formerly known as the International Organisation of Consumers Unions (IOCU), instituted the World Consumer Rights Day officially. The ICOU decided to commemorate the day Kennedy made his historical speech to champion consumer rights around the globe.
Significant milestones have been reached since the inception of this day. One worth mentioning was the addition of two new rights by the Consumer International in 1985 – the right to satisfaction of basic needs and the right to redress; broadening the scope significantly. In 1999, United Nations adopted a set of guidelines for consumer protection, further giving impetus to the movement.
