On October 16, 1945, 42 countries gathered in Quebec, Canada, to establish the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN). FAO’s goal was to free humanity from hunger and malnutrition, in addition to developing agricultural, forestry, and fishery sectors. Little did they know, this would eventually lead to the creation of World Food Day, a significant global event promoting food security and sustainable agricultural methods.
It wasn’t until 1979 that the idea of World Food Day took off, as delegates from various countries attending the 20th General Conference of the FAO proposed this idea. By 1980, the UN General Assembly endorsed the worldwide observance of World Food Day, and the first official celebration took place on October 16, 1981. The themes change annually, focusing on different aspects of global food issues to raise awareness and encourage action.
Over the years, World Food Day celebrations have grown and evolved. No longer just a single day, events and campaigns now occur throughout October, deemed “World Food Month” in some circles.
