Origins and History: The story of Oktoberfest goes back to the 19th century, when the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig tied the knot with Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. To celebrate the royal wedding, a grand public festival was held on a meadow outside the city gates of Munich. The event was such a hit that it started an annual tradition now known as Oktoberfest!
Racing and Beer: Initially, Oktoberfest featured horse racing as the main attraction. But over time, its focus shifted towards food, music, and, of course, beer! The first beer tents appeared in 1896, which still remain a signature attraction of the fest today.
Cultural Traditions: Every year, millions of visitors from around the world flock to Munich to partake in this lively Bavarian festival. Along with beer from the six Munich breweries, the celebrations include parades, music, and traditional activities like the tapping of the first keg by the Mayor. The attendees often wear dirndls and lederhosen, making for a truly authentic and unforgettable experience.
