Wellness Day is a globally recognized day, celebrated annually every 10th of June, that highlights the importance of living healthy, both physically and mentally. Described as the “health equivalent of Earth Day”, National Wellness Day started from humble beginnings and has evolved into a worldwide event.
It was originated in Turkey by Belgin Aksoy in 2012 with a simple yet compelling idea: one day can change your whole life. The philosophy of National Wellness Day is to reject the increase in global depression and obesity rates, societal pressure, and chronic stress.
What began as a small, national emphasis on wellbeing rapidly expanded to a mainstream, global celebration. The first National Wellness Day event was hosted at Richmond Nua Wellness Spa in Turkey, and by 2013, it was celebrated in 300 locations in Turkey. In 2015, thousands participated across 55 countries, in 7 continents-
the resonance was clear, people globally needed a day to remember the value of health and wellness.
With an increase in mental health conversations and more societies adopting an open-minded approach to emotional and physical wellbeing, Wellness Day’s importance has only grown.
Through the years, National Wellness Day has seen participation from a broad spectacle of society, from health experts, yoga teachers, celebrities, dance parties, free workout classes and much more, allowing for practical demonstrations of what a life of healthier physical and mental habits might feel like.
Not just that, but its unique mantra, “One day can change your whole life, ” inspires everyone regardless of age, status, or background, reinforcing the idea that wellness is not a privilege, but a fundamental right.
As we evolve in this rollercoaster year, Wellness Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of taking charge of our health on every level, and that every individual’s journey towards better health deserves to be celebrated.
So, let’s celebrate National Wellness Day and remember to prioritize our well-being not just today, but every day.
