On 15th March each year, the world acknowledges the importance of consumer rights by celebrating World Consumer Rights Day. The origin of this crucial day goes back to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy of the United States declared four fundamentary consumer rights: the right to safety, the right to information, the right to choose, and the right to heard.
While these rights formed the bedrock, it was not until 1983 that Consumer International, formerly known as the International Organisation of Consumers Unions (IOCU), instituted the World Consumer Rights Day officially. The ICOU decided to commemorate the day Kennedy made his historical speech to champion consumer rights around the globe.
Significant milestones have been reached since the inception of this day. One worth mentioning was the addition of two new rights by the Consumer International in 1985 – the right to satisfaction of basic needs and the right to redress; broadening the scope significantly. In 1999, United Nations adopted a set of guidelines for consumer protection, further giving impetus to the movement.
Over the years, the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day saw a considerable evolution. The initial years were marked by raising awareness about general consumer rights; however, with the advent of digital age, the focus shifted towards online consumers.
Every year, a new theme is introduced, addressing pressing issues related to consumer rights. Be it “Making Digital Marketplaces Fairer” in 2018 or “The Sustainable Consumer” in 2020, the objective remains to protect and promote consumer rights in the changing times. Today, World Consumer Rights Day serves a dual purpose – it not only champions consumers’ rights worldwide but also fosters cooperation among various consumer groups.
The evolution of World Consumer Rights Day symbolises the increasing prominence of consumer rights and their vital role in today’s global economy. It’s a day to celebrate, understand, and work towards a fairer marketplace that respects and prioritises the consumers.
