The International Credit Union (ICU) Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of October each year. As a playful celebration and recognition, it is meant to recognize and honor the significant role that credit unions around the globe play in fostering economic development and promoting societal prosperity.

So, where did it all begin?

Let’s time-travel back to the year 1948. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) decided it was about time credit unions had their moment in the spotlight. Hence, on the third Thursday of every October since then, credit unions have been holding their heads high and celebrating ICU Day!

The aim? To create global awareness about the impactful work carried by these organizations and the principles of credit unions: cooperation, community involvement, and customer service.

As the years have evolved, so has the celebration of ICU Day. It is no longer a symbolic nod to the work of credit unions, but a day of action and advocacy. Credit unions worldwide conduct community events, volunteer services, host open houses, and so much more!

Nowadays, the day is often marked by a theme set by the World Council of Credit Unions. Previous themes have ranged from “The Authentic Difference” to “Local Service. Global Reach.” This helps to highlight important issues or areas of focus and tailor the day’s celebrations.

Through its rich history, ICU day has become a beautiful blend of recognition, celebration, action, and advocacy, reflecting the very essence of credit unions themselves. It has truly blossomed into a day of positive global impact, just like the hardworking credit unions it honors.
