What would we do without that magical force called teamwork? Originating from our very early ancestors who had to hunt, gather and protect their tribes together, it has morphed into an essential part of our daily lives and business operations.
As we evolved, so did the significance and recognition of teamwork. Ancient civilizations like the Egyptians working together to construct the pyramids or the Greeks coordinating in their formidable phalanxes clearly demonstrate the early value of teamwork. The importance of recognizing and rewarding teamwork emerged gradually as societies progressed, increased in complexity and started to value collective effort.
One pivotal moment came in the 19th century, when the industrial revolution brought about massive changes in work dynamics. Teams were assembled to operate newly developed machinery. This wave of industrialization emphasized that successful production was not only due to individual skills but also coordinated efforts.
The notion of teamwork took a more formal shape in the 20th century when various theories around it started to emerge. Social scientist Bruce Tuckman’s ‘forming, storming, norming, performing’ model, presented in 1965 is one of the many that highlights the intricacies of team dynamics. To boost morale and productivity, organizations started implementing Teamwork Recognition Programs.
The 21st century brought a digital revolution, adding another layer to teamwork. Virtual teams, spread across geographical boundaries, became commonplace. With it, innovative ways of recognizing teamwork like recognition software and virtual rewards have surfaced.
In spite of its evolution, the core principle of teamwork remains unchanged: “Together Everyone Achieves More”. As we continue to redefine workplaces and work nature, we can only anticipate the evolution of teamwork recognition to keep pace, encouraging collaboration and mutual success.
